They've dropped nationwide by about a nickel, and as CBS 2's Susan Carlson reports, analysts are predicting even bigger drops through the rest of the summer.

For the first time in awhile, drivers can fill up at the pump without a pained expression.

"We saw a substantial drop in the price of crude oil, which it appears gas station owners were in a hurry to pass on to consumers," said Phill Flynn, Vice President an Senior Market Analyst at Alaron Trading.

AAA reports gas prices in the Chicago area are averaging $4.25 a gallon Wednesday. That's down from $4.27 Tuesday, and $4.33 last Friday.

"So often we hear gas prices rise like a rocket and drop like a feather, this time, they're starting to drop like a rock and that's a good thing," Flynn said.

That's partly because demand is down about 4 percent from where it usually is. Many people have put the brakes on driving this summer because it costs too much.

The promise of a bargain has many people flocking over the border. At a gas station on Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond, Ind., CBS 2 found gas for just $3.75 a gallon.

"I rehab houses in the area, Gary and so forth, so it's worth the while to drive over from Crete," said Troy Brown.

Customers are pouring into Luke's Gas Station from the south suburbs and other parts of Indiana.

"I'm just over in Highland, a few miles away, and as soon as you cross over into Hammond, the gas is at least 10 cents cheaper," Suzanne Stinnett said.

But soon, you may not have to go as far as Hammond to get a good deal. Analysts say right now, gas prices are on track to keep plummeting through the end of the summer.

"We could see $3.70 in the city and if we get really lucky, maybe $3.50 by Labor Day," Flynn said.
http://cbs2chicago.com/local/gas.prices.drop.2.778351.html

Ford posts $8.7 billion loss

By Aaron Smith, CNNMoney.com staff writer
Last Updated: July 24, 2008: 10:26 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford Motor Co. announced plans to transform its vehicle lineup and reported a massive second-quarter loss Thursday.

Ford (F, Fortune 500) stock fell about 8% in early trading.

"Because of deteriorating economic conditions, demand has declined dramatically, especially in North America," said Ford CEO Alan Mulally, who also blamed rising gas prices for the decline.

Mulally said the company is working toward reducing its salaried workforce by 15%. The company aims to save $5 billion annually, and has managed to reduce costs by $1 billion so far.

He also said the company is now shifting its focus "to bring to the North American market smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles that people increasingly want."

The company said it will make big changes to the vehicles it sells domestically - bringing six small cars made in Europe to the North American market.

Ford said that three large truck and sport utility vehicle plants in Wayne, Mich., Louisville, Ky., and Cuautitlan, Mexico would be switched over for the manufacture of small cars. Re-tooling will begin in December, the company said.

In addition to converting the three plants in North America, Ford said it will ramp up production of small utility vehicles at its Kansas City, Mo., assembly plant, including the Ford Escape, Escape Hybrid, Mercury Mariner and Mariner Hybrid.

Mulally said that, in the second quarter, Ford rolled out two new vehicles - the Ford Flex, a "crossover" car-based SUV, and the Lincoln MKS luxury sedan. Mulally said these are the first vehicles with "eco boost" technology, providing better fuel economy.

As production winds down, Ford has been slashing production of SUVs and large trucks to meet the reduced demand, and delayed the launch of its new F-150. But some truck and SUV lines will continue, at least for now.

Ford said it will continue to produce the Ford Ranger through 2011 at its Twin Cities, Minn. plant, which was scheduled to close in 2009. The company also said it would shift production of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator to its Louisville plant from Wayne, Mich.

Tough quarter Ford said it lost $8.7 billion, or $3.88 per share, in the second quarter, including pre-tax special charges primarily due to the write-down of assets. A year earlier, the automaker announced a profit of $750 million, or 31 cents per share.

Without charges, Ford reported a loss of $1.4 billion, or 62 cents per share, in the latest quarter.

Revenue, excluding special items, fell to $38.6 billion from $44.2 billion a year earlier.

Ford said the special items included $8 billion in write-offs stemming from the loss in value to Ford North American and its Ford Credit lease portfolio. For this, Ford blamed "deteriorating economic conditions."

Ford managed to beat analyst expectations on revenue, but missed on earnings. Analysts expected Ford to report a 14% drop in revenue to $34.6 billion, and a loss of 27 cents per share, without charges, according to consensus compiled by Thomson/First Call.

Hard-hit Ford, like its American rival GM (GM, Fortune 500), has been hard-hit by economic weakness. In particular, rising gas prices have severely hampered consumer interest in big trucks and SUVs. In 2007, Ford lost its place as the No. 2 automaker in the U.S. to the Japanese automaker Toyota (TM).

Ford has been offering buyouts to the hourly employees among its 54,000-strong workforce. But only 4,200 workers accepted, far short of the company's goal. On Monday, Ford said that a new round of buyout and early retirement offers had been made to workers at 17 facilities.

On Wednesday, the rival U.S. automaker Chrysler also announced that it was cutting 1,000 salaried jobs.

Ford's stock has fallen 10% so far this year. But it still managed to outperform the S&P, which has dropped 12%.

http://money.cnn.com/2008/07/24/news/companies/ford/index.htm?postversion=2008072407

I guess people aren't buying that many F150's anymore!

ARE YOU PROUD OF YOUR HERITAGE

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/brent-baker/2008/07/24/cbs-frets-obama-cant-escape-hussein-middle-name-israel

Why we need to keep gas above $4

A new gasoline tax that ensured high prices would accelerate the move toward fuel-efficient vehicles and provide enough revenue to allow a cut in corporate taxes.

On the surface, the market's behavior on certain days of June and July has been so illogical that my brain simply has refused to accept it. Double-digit intraday swings in prices of stocks without any material catalyst have become routine.

But last week's trading has finally explained what should have been clear for a while: Though current economic troubles may have started with lax credit and underwriting standards and the ensuing subprime-mortgage fiasco, they will likely continue or end based on the behavior of another, seemingly unrelated macroeconomic input: oil prices.

Forget the naked short selling hype or the problems of Fannie Mae (FNM, news, msgs) and Freddie Mac (FRE, news, msgs). These are simply headline grabbers and symptoms of the U.S. economy's problems.

The seemingly unstoppable rise of oil prices over the past several years has brought chaos and pain to so many sectors of the economy that even presumably conservative U.S. politicians have called for a gas tax "holiday" to give consumers short-term relief at the pump.

However, the solution to our economic woes lies actually in the opposite direction: making sure prices for gasoline stay high long enough. Let me explain.
An addiction that can be broken
Many economists have argued for years that even a doubling or tripling of oil prices would have little effect on demand because of that demand's inelasticity. U.S. consumers are supposedly so addicted to gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs that pretty much every politician and economist out there has ridiculed suggestions that demand could decline.

One might argue that this notion was supported by hard data. Even when oil prices doubled and tripled from their multiyear lows of the early 2000s, the growth in demand did not really slow. But contrary to the conventional beliefs, the "unthinkable" finally happened this year: Sales of cars overtook truck and SUV sales, and gasoline demand faltered.

According to the data from the Energy Information Administration, gasoline demand in the U.S. has been running consistently below last year's levels. Though it is difficult to pinpoint the exact price level that triggered this seismic change, the demand for the supposedly inelastic product started to decline somewhere around $4 a gallon.

One might say it wasn't just the price at the pump but rather combination of several economic woes that has led consumers to cut back. I agree, but only to a point. I don't think it was by accident that the sectors that have declined the most recently -- auto manufacturers, airlines, convenience stores, casinos, hotels, car rental companies, restaurants, etc. -- have one ingredient in common: They are particularly affected by high energy prices.

So instead of debating the causes of today's oil prices -- peak oil supply, demand in China or whatever -- we should thank Wall Street and Ben Bernanke and company at the Federal Reserve for finally showing us how this oil dilemma could be solved.

I think it could be accomplished only by making sure the prices for the most widely used petroleum product, gasoline, never again decline below the level that seems to have triggered change, somewhere around $4 a gallon. Raising fuel taxes would likely make things better, not worse. Before sending me an "I hate taxes" e-mail, consider instead sending a letter to your politician asking him or her to raise taxes.

Take a look at the facts: Damage to the most energy-sensitive sectors has been done already, and Americans are already paying a hidden oil tax. But instead sending of our money to Washington, we are now sending it to the other governments around the world, and it's not a small bill. In 2007, the U.S. petroleum import bill came to an astounding $331 billion. In the first five months of 2008, the total was $191 billion.
The upside of a higher gas tax
Yes, even though I believe government intervention is usually a bad thing, establishing a variable gasoline tax that ensured gasoline never declined below $4 a gallon could alter the dynamics of the global economy and help the U.S. maintain its economic leadership status for years to come.

Economist Gregory Mankiw has estimated a $1 tax increase on gasoline could raise $100 billion in revenue that could (and should) be used to reduce the ridiculously high U.S. corporate tax rate. That, in turn, could lead to more jobs and better pay in virtually all domestic industries.

A variable tax on gasoline would accomplish another important objective: Knowing for certain that gas prices would never drop back to $2 a gallon, consumers and manufacturers would rapidly accelerate the shift to more-fuel-efficient vehicles. This would reduce long-term gasoline-demand expectations and could lead to lower short-term energy prices for the struggling energy-sensitive sectors of the U.S. economy.

During this election year, I don't expect any politicians will have enough courage to propose raising gas taxes. But maybe if plenty of us ask, they'll at least listen.

For now, the direction of the U.S. stock market and the economy will likely be determined by the direction oil prices are heading. And given how painful last week's losses must have been to the seemingly bulletproof Wall Street buy-energy, short-financials strategy, one would expect that Goldman Sachs (GS, news, msgs) and company are now busy preparing another "Oil prices to hit $200 by Labor Day" report and writing big donation checks to the powerful ethanol and environmental lobbies that might just lead to another price spike.

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/StrategyLab/Rnd17/P2/TheAmateurJournal20080722.aspx

There's no doubt we have cut back consumption, and I was actually thinking what would we as Americans do if pump prices declined. Would we increase our demand and go back to the way we were doing things? Or do we continue to cut consumption and change the way we live?

The cry for change in the way we use and develop our energy, gets louder as the price at the pump increases. This gas tax would be VERY painful, but it just might keep us headed in the right direction as far as energy is concerned.

Caleb Campbell, put away those shoulder pads, you're in the Army now.

I know this is somewhat FB related, but it is beyond all that. I shrugged it off, by the way. That’s because this particular thing would rank somewhere between ludicrous and outrageous if it happened.

Barry Bonds.

That’s the name the guy mentioned to me while nodding. To paraphrase what the guy proceeded to say: “With the Braves struggling in the clutch at the plate along the way to a slew of one-run losses [or losses, period], why not grab the biggest free agent out there that nobody wants?”

Well, here’s why: It would be absolutely insane. The primary reason Bonds hasn’t signed with anybody to date is because nobody wishes to have the circus that would come with such a move.

In case you haven’t heard, Bonds is slated to have a federal trial next year on perjury charges involving his (ahem) alleged dabbling in performance-enhancing drugs. Not only that, he hasn’t been the most accommodating athlete regarding teammates, reporters and fans.

None of that mattered to this guy, though, because he said the positives involving Bonds on the Braves would override the negatives. He is baseball’s all-time leader in home runs, and he even slammed 28 last season. He turns 44 on Thursday, but he still is younger than former Braves first baseman Julio Franco.

He could show the Braves’ young hitters how to remain disciplined in the batter’s box no matter what. He could give the Braves much needed pop off the bench. Despite his fading defensive skills, he could play occasionally in left field. He could help the Braves’ attendance that has slide below the major-league average.

And don’t forget: Braves executive John Schuerholz mentioned in his book two years ago that he once tried to trade for Bonds and almost had him.

I’m sorry, but I’m back to visions of a Bonds-induced circus at Turner Field, and remember: The Braves traditionally haven’t been into sideshows.

Then again, what do you think? Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill., at 1 p.m. on July 31, prove his identity and sign a photograph of the infamous play. It will then be auctioned on the Web site with the proceeds going to a Chicago-based charity, according to a news release for the publicity stunt event.

"No one in sports memorabilia history has ever been paid $25,000 to sign one autograph — not Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, or any other athlete,” said Mike Berkus, co-Executive Director of The National. "Steve Bartman has been a recluse for years, but we’re hopeful that he will accept our invitation and generous offer to appear ... We have personal security to provide to Steve at The National and to a destination of his choosing.”

It's an ingenious marketing plan, really, because I'm sure the organizers know they're dealing with probably the only man on Earth who wouldn't simply sign his name and then collect $25K. In the almost five years since his name became synonymous with the Billy Goat curse, Bartman has turned down every single interview request that has come his way and no doubt also said no to numerous book-TV-movie deals that were worth much, much more than what a bunch of baseball card dealers are offering here.

What's worth noting, though, is just how much attention just the mention of Bartman's name in a press release can draw. Can you imagine what it'd be like if he actually showed up for one of these stunts?

for the guys to get their day started right

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXlWsBhFvis

The basic resumes of the last ten Presidents, McCain, and Obama.

Dwight Eisenhower- Supreme commander of the Allied forces during World War II.
John F. Not only are sequels to older films hot these days (see: Indiana Jones 4, Rocky 6, Die Hard 4), but Tom Cruise could provide a real boost to his rep if he were to revisit the character that kinda made him. Whether or not it would actually turn out to be a good movie is a whole different conversation. First off, according to those extremely reliable cats at The Sun, a script outline for Top Gun 2 is done and "movie bosses" want Cruise to star.

Apparently a source said this about the plot: "The idea is Maverick is at the Top Gun school as an instructor - and this time it is he who has to deal with a cocky new female pilot." Ooohh, original ... and spicy! It's like Karate Kid 4 meets A Really Big Paycheck for Tom Cruise! And yet ... we'd all still see it. Why are we such suckers? We currently have no idea how real this rumor is, so for the time being I wouldn't exactly break out into song and dance. Maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't.

What say you? Could this be the sequel we've subconsciously been waiting for our entire lives?"

That sounds absolutely terrible, I really hope this isn't true.
For those who will aknowledge such things. I used to love the left but I grew out of it.

When Obama loses the election I'm not gonna gloat, I know that liberals are miserable and there is no reason to gloat, you shouldn't gloat over others misery. I didn't gloat when Gore lost, Kerry lost, or will I when Obama loses.

I want everyone to be at peace, there will be a lot of anger when Obama loses but I advise you for your own benefit to not get down about it. If you're black and angry when Obama loses just remember that He lost because of his liberalism not his skin color (He's the most liberal Senator in the Senate). Don't be angry at whites because they don't vote for him, He's liberal and that is why He'll lose. If you're homosexual and Obama loses don't be mad at the country and think everyone hates you because you're gay, Obama will lose because He is too liberal. If you're of another religion and at this point in your life hate (Christians), don't be mad if the stereotypical (Christians) vote against Obama, the main reason is because He's too liberal.

I've known those of the liberal persuasion and they often times take elections personally and will think people hate them because of their race, sexual preference, religion or whatever the case may be. Believe me I know.

I know how liberals feel because I once was one, you always feel like you're swimming upstream, against Christianity, the rich, big business, narrow minded people. I've been there and I know the anger associated with liberalism. I was once a liberal and as the saying goes "If you're not a liberal when you're 20 you don't have a heart, and if you're not a conservative by the time you're 40 you don't have a brain'.

So, I don't hate those on the left, I do feel as though you're misguided but then again I know how sensitive liberals are and they will think that is patronizing and condescending but please don't take it that way.

Don't be down and don't be discouraged, McCain has a "R" by his name but he's almost a Democrat anyway.

The "NEW" Jason Voorhees

He looks sooooo much different. She makes embarrassing claims about their intimate life and then calls his office to repeat those claims to a stunned assistant.

On the video, Walsh-Smith also goes through their wedding album, describing family members as "bad," "evil" or "nasty," and expresses concern about eviction from the couple's luxury apartment.

Judge Harold Beeler blasted Walsh-Smith for her video stunt, which he called "a calculated and callous campaign to embarrass and humiliate her husband" and to pressure him into settling the divorce case on more favorable terms than were stated in their prenuptial agreement.

"She has attempted to turn the life of her husband into a soap opera by directing, writing, acting in and producing a melodrama," the judge said.

He said Monday that the prenuptial agreement, signed three weeks before the couple's 1999 wedding, was valid. This means that Walsh-Smith must leave their Park Avenue apartment within 30 days and that Smith, president of the Shubert Organization, the largest theater owner on Broadway, must pay her $750,000.

Smith said after the ruling he was "sorry it had to come to this."

"I'm happy with the decision of the judge, and I'm happy with the outcome," he said.

Walsh-Smith, a former actress and playwright, didn't see the decision the same way.

"I think it's disgusting," she said. "I'm really, really disappointed with the decision."

She accused Smith of "basically throwing me out on the street." One of her attorneys, Joseph P. McCaffery, said they would appeal.

Renowned divorce attorney Raoul Felder briefly represented Walsh-Smith after she made the video. Felder previously said his client was "acting out of passion."

"This is a victim who is holding her head up," he said. "I think she comes off well."

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/07/22/youtube.divorce.ap/index.html

I have a new fear of lightning.

I found this morning that during the terrible thunderstorms last night a house on the street behind me was hit by lightning. "I think it was . . . a situation where I didn't know who to expect coming in, coming over to Athens. But it's a great city and a great organization. They do whatever they can to make you feel at home."

The deal is the most lucrative current contract in European basketball and the biggest in Euroleague history. It's also another step in the globalization of the game, a trend that got a huge boost recently when the top-rated U.S. high school player, California native Brandon Jennings, opted for a contract with an Italian team over playing at Arizona.

Childress' move is a blow to the Hawks, who have no recourse to match an offer made to a restricted free agent by a non-NBA team. Rockefeller, the Senate’s Intelligence Committee chairman, attacked Senator John McCain last week during an interview with the Charleston Gazette. Rockefeller said:

"McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn’t know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues."

Continued

Sponsored Links:

Secrets Most Men Will Never Know About Self Defense
Newt Gingrich Weekly: Winning the Future
Amazing Japanese Longevity Secret
Laura Ingraham's New "Power to the People" -- Yours FREE!
Huge Profits from ETFs in 5 Easy Steps

Several of the senator’s facts are simply wrong, but far more disturbing is the radical worldview betrayed by such remarks. John McCain was a pilot serving his country during a time of war. Yet Senator Rockefeller speaks about his service with such contempt that the reader is left with the impression that John McCain is the “bad guy.”

The McCain campaign was quick to respond with a statement from retired Marine Lt. Col. Orson Swindle, who said:

“Senator Rockefeller’s statement is an insult to all the men and women who are serving or have served in America’s military. Had Senator Rockefeller served himself, he would appreciate and understand that most who have been to war emerge with a much deeper concern for humanity than they otherwise might. If he knew what he was talking about, he would know that John McCain wasn’t dropping laser-guided missiles at 35,000 feet in 1967.”

On the campaign trail, McCain often cites his wartime experiences, including five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, as having helped form his belief in the importance of defending human rights, or as Rockefeller might say, “the rights of people.”

Under pressure from the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, whom he recently endorsed, Rockefeller apologized, saying, “I have deep respect for John McCain’s honorable and noble service to our country. I made an inaccurate and wrong analogy and I have extended my sincere apology to him. I regret my very poor choice of words.”

But Rockefeller is just the latest in a long line of Democrats who have disparaged the American military. Democrat Rep. Jack Murtha has called our Marines, “cold blooded killers.” Democrat Senator John Kerry accused our soldiers of “terrorizing women and children” in Iraq. Democrat Dick Durbin, the senior senator from Illinois, compared our military police at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis and Soviet gulag guards. And Ted Kennedy once said that, “Saddam’s torture chambers reopened under new management, U.S. management.”

It might seem strange that so many Democrats align themselves with their party’s anti-military fringe, especially given that these extremists are so few in number and hold foreign policy views that are to the left of both Obama and Hillary, whose views, in turn, are well to the left of most voters. But the anti-war extremists have come to compose the most ruthless and vocal interest group in American politics.

The anti-war movement has devolved from smug anti-Bushism to the belief that America, its military and allies are at the root of all that ails the world. Democratic politicians must move in lock step with the fringe anti-war left or risk being savaged by the “net-roots,” whose demands for a swift withdrawal from Iraq, ironically, would provoke more war, bloodshed and possibly genocide.

This week, I received word from friends that their only son had been killed in Iraq. Having already served two tours of duty as a Navy SEAL, their son recently returned to Iraq to train Iraqi special forces when the truck he was riding in was hit by an IED, which exploded, killing the truck’s driver and all eight passengers.

What struck me was that despite losing their only son, my friends were resolute in their belief that America must promote and defend liberty in the Middle East. If these parents of a fallen hero can remain steadfast to the cause of liberty, why do so many others find it so difficult?

The Democrats must stand up to their party’s anti-military fringe, because while Americans may be frustrated with the pace of progress in Iraq, I believe the “silent majority” is rapidly running out of patience for the “blame America first” crowd and the “God D--- America” chorus. It’s high time for the Democrats to prove that they are not, as Senator Joe Lieberman contends, “emotionally invested in a narrative of defeat and retreat in Iraq.”

The American electorate will not put up with the steady stream of vicious attacks against American troops, whose selfless bravery on battlefields across the globe and unwavering devotion to the idea that freedom must prevail serve as an example to all Americans.

Mr. Bauer, a 2000 candidate for president, is chairman of Campaign for Working

Peter Berg to make Hercules: The Thracian Wars

I felt a lot better about Peter Berg taking on projects I was excited about before I saw Hancock. On the bright side, there was that one really funny Simpsons episode with Lucy Lawless.

It’s not entirely clear yet whether or not Berg will actually direct the movie, to be titled Hercules: The Thracian Wars (does every movie have to have a bad subtitle?). For now, he’s only in line to produce and develop the concept from a script by some guy named Ryan Condal and, of course, based on a comic book by someone else. Because it would be impossible to write a good Hercules script without first reading a comic book about it. Comics… that’s where Hercules came from isn’t it? What? Historical myths? ##### that noise, the people want comic books. Well... they don't actually want to read them.
