JERIOUS NORWOOD....he should be the face of the franchise. he proven more then matt ryan, and before someone says QB's have to the the face of every team, no they dont. brees is not the face in new orleans, garcia or whoever there QB is is not the face in tampa, delhommo is not the face in carolina. i just dont get how he can come in and be givin handed the face of the franchise name when we already have good, proven young players that can be associated with that name already.

I hear a lot of comparison between Norwood and Bush...

...but I have always looked at LT as a possible blueprint for how to use Norwood. I know nobody has ever thought of him as the every down back, but if you're mixing up the play calls, he has that kind of potential. Of course Turner isn't here to play that same role he played in SD, but I just thought Norwood deserved a little more respect thatn comparing him to the overhyped Bush. Reggie isn't even as good a runner as Norwood.

AFMB Meet & Greet at training camp with J. I find that hard to believe. I think coaches always try to put the best player on the field. This year won't be any different. The only difference will be that just because the previous coaching staff thought you were the best doesn't mean we do. Their defense is awful, and they got rid of their best defensive player in Shaun Rogers. THeir cornerbacks are almost as bad as ours. And this might be the one team where our safteys are better... And besdies Ernie Simms, their linebackers are below average. And they have the worst DE tandem in the league(maybe not, i dont know every teams DE's).

Their offense is alot better than their defense, but its still not very good. Obviously their bright spot is their WR core which is very good, probably top 5 in the league. THey have superstar Roy Williams and upcoming superstar Calvin Johnson and more than adequate backups in Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey. And you would think they would own our young defense, but not so fast! They have a 36 year old quarterback in Kitna and he is very underachieving. Last year he went 18 TD and 20 INT and 21-22 the year before that. And the Lions run a very predictable offense, since they cant run (their best runningback in Tatum Bell whose very fast but is a terrible overall runningback and rookie Kevin Smith who I know nothing about) with their shaky O-line (altho they did draft a OT with their first round pick but who knows how good he will be by week 1), they will be very pass happy. Which means if Abe and J Anderson can get pressure on Kitna (Which shouldnt be too hard), their offense should be compromised. They dont have a very good TE either.

Bottom line, if we can prevent the deep ball, we should win.

I'll write week 2 later, this took longer than i thoguht it would

FOX Sports Power Rankings

After what seems to have been an eternal offseason packed with player movement, off-the-field legal issues, coaching hires and fires, and bizarre media circuses in both New England and Green Bay, it's finally time for some actual football. Yes, real, live football! Well, sorta. Camps open up around the league this week. Before we get down in the trenches, let's check out our first edition of the 2008 NFL Power Rankings.

1 — New England: The Patriots have no doubt had a tumultuous offseason. Aside from lingering Spygate fallout, there have been the Nick Kaczur, Kevin Faulk and Willie Andrews arrests and a host of key contributors from the '07 team lost to free agency. That said, the Pats bring all the majority of their big dogs back — most importantly Randy Moss — and will be playing with a vengeance in '08. On paper, they have the easiest schedule in the entire league this season. Vegas currently has the Pats listed with 15-1 odds to go undefeated in 2008. It's not a bad bet. New England could be as good as they were last season. This time, they're looking to end the year with a win. Camp: Foxboro, Mass.

2 — New York Giants: It looks as though everyone's crowning Dallas the preseason favorites in the NFC East. Nonsense. The Giants, despite losing Jeremy Shockey and Super Bowl stars Kawika Mitchell, Gibril Wilson and Michael Strahan this offseason, are primed to repeat not only as NFC champions, but Super Bowl kings. Lineman David Diehl told me a few weeks ago, "A lot of people had us picked last in 2007. Where they are picking us now is really nothing new to us. Nobody picked us in the playoffs or the Super Bowl. But we always had high expectation for ourselves. Everyone is committed and dedicated to putting in the hard work it takes to prove ourselves again." In short, this is an angry team, ready to show the world that last year was no fluke. You've got to beat the best to be the best. And until Dallas does that -- New York gets my nod as the NFC favorites. Camp: Albany, N.Y.

3 — San Diego: While discussing FOXSports.com's fantasy football last week, I chatted with LaDainian Tomlinson about the MCL injury that kept him out of the majority of last year's playoffs. He says he's healthy and ready to go. He better be. Backing up L.T. is no longer big-play threat Michael Turner, but rather, a hodgepodge of rookies (Jacob Hester) and unproven backs (Darren Sproles, Marcus Thomas). Lorenzo Neal's gone too, being replaced by fifth-year man Andrew Pinnock. A 100 percent L.T. or not, the Chargers are loaded across the board and start the season with games against five teams that finished under .500 last year. The AFC West isn't quite the division it used to be, either. Unless Denver puts it all together sooner than expected, San Diego should cruise into the playoffs as AFC West champions this season. Camp: San Diego, Calif.

4 — Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Manning's out for 4-6 weeks, Marvin Harrison's future is a bit murky and longtime guard Jake Scott is now with the enemy Tennessee Titans. Reason to worry? Nah. Indy's won five straight AFC South titles and they're going to be near impossible to beat at home in their new stadium. Despite injuries across the board, the defense still ranked tops in the league in '07. As long as Dungy's on that sideline and Manning's under center, the Colts aren't going anywhere but the postseason. Book them for their sixth straight AFC South title and at least one playoff game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Camp: Terre Haute, Ind.

5 — Dallas: For a franchise that hasn't won a playoff game in 12 years, the media sure has a lot of confidence in the Cowboys this off-season. Everywhere you look, pundits are pegging Dallas as the NFC East favorites and the Super Bowl frontrunners out of the NFC. In truth, Jerry Jones did some nice things in the off-season, plucking both Zach Thomas and Adam Jones for 40 cents on the dollar, and re-signing Ken Hamlin to a long-term deal. Wade Phillips is Marty Schottenheimer Lite, though, having never won a playoff game, himself. Anything less than a conference title will be seen as a great disappointment in Big D this season. Is this squad up to the challenge? We'll have to wait and see. Camp: Oxnard, Calif.

6 — Jacksonville: If you listen to everyone else, this is the year Jacksonville's going to end Indianapolis' reign of terror over the AFC South and become the first division champions other than the Colts since 2002. After all, the Jags drafted two top flight pass rushers in Derrick Harvey and Quintin Groves, scooped up Troy Williamson and Jerry Porter via free agency, and bring back the majority of last year's wild-card squad. David Garrard's the quarterback, there are no questions there, and the Jags are certainly poised to return to the playoffs. Don't be shocked if they win 10-12 games in '08. But until they beat Indianapolis on the road, I'm not handing them the AFC South crown. Camp: Jacksonville, Fla.

7 — Seattle: Mike Holmgren's last season has a legitimate chance to end with glory. Of course, there are question marks all over. Are Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett going to serve as upgrades to Shaun Alexander at running back? Will losing D.J. Hackett hurt Matt Hasselbeck more than everyone's letting on? Are Patrick Kerney,32, and Julian Peterson, 30, going to be able to stay healthy and turn in the Pro Bowl caliber seasons they did last year all over again? What's up with Bobby Engram's contract and Deion Branch's health? Seattle should be able to defend their division crown in the soft NFC West, but there's not much room for error or injury. To contend for an NFC title, they'll need to be all systems go for 19 weeks. Camp: Kirkland, Wash.

8 — Cleveland: Everyone's going ga-ga over Cleveland this summer, and with good reason. The Browns, despite missing the postseason, were the surprise of the 2007 season, winning 10 games -- about six more than anyone expected. Over the off-season, they beefed up their defensive line with Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams, and scooped up a first-round talent at linebacker in UNLV's Beau Bell on the draft's second day. Donte Stallworth adds even more big-play ability on an already sizzling offense. The catch? That schedule. It's a nightmare. Anything less than a postseason berth will be a disappointment in Cleveland this season. Camp: Berea, Ohio.

9 — Pittsburgh: Big Ben got big money this off-season, but he also lost his steadiest protector, Alan Faneca. In a seven-week span starting in late October, Pittsburgh takes on the Super Bowl champion Giants, the NFC wild-card qualifying Redskins, the AFC South champion Colts, the AFC West champion Chargers, the rival Bengals, the AFC champion Patriots, and the NFC East champion Cowboys. All in a row. It's the toughest schedule in the league, and arguably the toughest I've ever seen. Pittsburgh's good, but I'm not sure they're good enough to survive that slate. They'll battle Cleveland for the AFC North title this season. It won't be easy. Camp: Latrobe, Pa.

10 — Washington: Everyone's talking about Philly, New York and Dallas in the NFC East, but it's Washington that returns 21 starters from last year's NFC wild-card team. Add in six-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor from Miami, free agent Erasmus James from Minnesota and gritty safety Stuart Schweigert — and a hit-or-miss defense from a year ago suddenly becomes one of the league's most dynamic. On offense, Jim Zorn brings a new offense and a new philosophy, and the bevy of new receiving options selected in April's draft give Jason Campbell some receivers above six feet to pass to. Want to talk sleeper NFC champion contenders? Look no further than the 202. Camp: Ashburn, Va.

11 — Philadelphia: Don't look now, but the Eagles — a squad that didn't make the playoffs last year — are legitimate Super Bowl contenders in '08. The addition of Asante Samuel gives Philadelphia a shut-down corner to put up against the Plaxico Burress' and Terrell Owens' of the world, while Donovan McNabb seems to be as healthy as he's been in years. Lightning rod receiver/return man DeSean Jackson should contribute right away as well. One potential issue? Unhappy cornerback Lito Sheppard, who just fired his old agents and replaced them with ... Drew Rosenhaus. Camp: Bethlehem, Pa.

12 — Minnesota: The offseason's biggest winners acquired the NFL's sack leader in Jared Allen via trade from Kansas City, arguably the best deep threat in the game in Bernard Berrian and a hard hitting young safety in Madieu Williams. The offensive and defensive lines are probably tops in the league and no one would doubt that the running game is among the league's most lethal. But the quarterback spot is still a lingering question mark. How many weeks will the Minnesota fans give Tarvaris Jackson before calling for rookie John David Booty as the new starter? The over/under is five. And that's generous. Camp: Mankato, Minn.

Much is expected of running back Adrian Peterson and the Vikings in '08. (Steve Dykes / Getty Images)

13 — Green Bay: Umm ... yeah, so about the Packers. Anyone have any idea on how to handicap these guys? Anyone? Yeah, I didn't think so. In truth, regardless of who's playing quarterback, holding the clipboard on the sideline or delivering the pre-game locker room speeches — this is a 13-3 team from a year ago that returns the majority of its starters on both sides of the field. They'll be competitive and in the thick of the NFC North title hunt. There are just too many unanswered questions to get a good feel for the Pack in late July. Camp: De Pere, Wis.

14 — New Orleans: After a disappointing 2007 season, New Orleans added several pieces to its defense, including former Jets star linebacker Jonathan Vilma and rookie Sedrick Ellis. On offense, 2007 first-round pick and rookie nightmare Robert Meachem is apparently healthy and back at his ideal playing weight. The kid's getting rave reviews out of Saints camp. Jeremy Shockey joins Sean Payton's offense, as well. Reggie Bush — aside from a few appearances on that absurd Kim Kardashian reality show — has been noticeably quiet this offseason. That's good. I expect huge things from him and Drew Brees this season. Don't be shocked if the resurgent Saints run away with the NFC South this season. Camp: Jackson, Miss.

15 — Tennessee: Despite what seemed at times to be a downright anemic offense, the Titans knocked off 10 teams en route to a playoff trip in '08. Vince Young didn't have quite the sophomore season Tennessee fans had hoped he would, but he still managed to do what he does best — win games. Tennessee lost two key players on their defensive line via free agency (Antwan Odom, Travis LaBoy), but picked up the still-hungry Jevon Kearse when the opportunity knocked. The AFC South is as strong as it's ever been, but who are we to bet against Jeff Fisher, the longest tenured and arguably best coach in all of football? He's done more with less 100 times before. Camp: Nashville, Tenn.

16 — Tampa Bay: A lot has been made of Brett Favre and Jon Gruden's friendship and a potential reunion down in Tampa Bay this season. That's not exactly fair to 38-year-old Jeff Garcia, a guy who revived a career on life support with a magical '07 campaign. Working with a patchwork offensive unit, the nine-year veteran led Tampa to a division title and a home playoff game last season. Ancient wideout Joey Galloway is back for another run at it and prehistoric running back Warrick Dunn joins an already solid backfield. The defense, which ranked third in the league in '07, could be even better. Yet, whether it's Garcia, Favre or any of the other 11 quarterbacks on the Tampa roster under center this season — history is against the Bucs in '08. No team has ever won the NFC South two years in a row. Camp: Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

17 — Houston: In 2008, Houston will be as competitive as they've ever been as a team. Yet, the odds are still against the franchise's first playoff berth. With Indianapolis, Jacksonville, and Tennessee all coming off postseason trips — the AFC South is as tough as it's ever been. Add in the fact that Houston plays four playoff teams in its first five games, and it won't be an easy start to '08. That said, Matt Schaub to Andre Johnson was arguably the best 1-2 combo in the league before injuries derailed each players' seasons last year, and the defense is one of the most promising young units in the entire league. Houston can very easily be either a 6-10 or 10-6 squad this season. Alas, neither record will likely be good enough in the loaded AFC. Camp: Houston, Texas.

18 — Denver: I prematurely pegged Jay Cutler as my preseason pick for MVP last season, insisting the second-year man would lead Denver to the postseason and past the Chargers for the AFC West crown. In truth, Cutler had a fine sophomore season, but was by no means an MVP candidate, with the Broncos finishing a disappointing 7-9 and missing the postseason. Denver should be better this year, but there are definite question marks on defense. Jim Bates is gone as coordinator, though, and highly regarded Bob Slowik takes over. Expect big things from second-year men Jarvis Moss and Marcus Thomas. Both former Gators are going to need to perform if Denver hopes to return to the postseason for the first time since 2005. Camp: Englewood, Colo.

19 — Cincinnati: Talk about an absolute wild-card of a team. In what could be coach Marvin Lewis's final year, Cincy could be a variety of teams: The AFC North champions they were in '05, the mild disappointment they were in '06, or the absolute disaster of a team they were in '07. In truth, Lewis needs his defense to perform or the Bengals have no shot at anything in '08. Chad Johnson's a distraction, but he's always ready to play come Sundays. The media blows that out of proportion. If the defense stays healthy and rookie Keith Rivers mans the LB spot like past rookie linebackers Patrick Willis and DeMeco Ryans did for their respective teams in their first seasons — Cincinnati could contend for a division title. And no, I'm not kidding. Camp: Georgetown, Ky.

20 — Carolina: Two straight seasons have been derailed by Jake Delhomme injuries in Carolina. This year, it may be the last shot for both he and Panthers coach John Fox in Charlotte. After trading future draft picks to secure the rights to mauling lineman Jeff Otah in the draft and spending big bucks on free agent receivers D.J. Hackett and Muhsin Muhammad, the expectations are high in Carolina for 2008. The Panthers need to win now. Delhomme's health — and specifically his elbow — will be key. Camp: Spartanburg, S.C.

21 — Buffalo: FOXSports.com colleague Adam Schein is all about the Bills this season, already labeling them as his playoff sleepers and a squad "cooking with gas". Of course, Schein said the same exact stuff about the Niners last year. In truth, Buffalo hasn't made the playoffs since the Music City Miracle game in 1999, and they're still a bit young to be considered legitimate contenders in the AFC. The Marcus Stroud and Kawika Mitchell acquisitions beef up the defense and the drafting of Leodis McKelvin gives Buffalo a top-flight cover corner/return man. The pieces are certainly coming together, but they're still likely a year away from January football. Camp: Pittsford, N.Y.

22 — St. Louis: The Rams suffered an absurd amount of injuries last season, losing their starting quarterback, running back and left tackle at different points throughout the season. They're all healthy now, and No. 2 overall pick Chris Long joins a young, but promising defensive line. It's no secret that coach Scott Linehan is on the hot seat, though, and the Rams' schedule is no walk in the park. In September and October alone, St. Louis plays the Cowboys, Giants, Redskins, Eagles, Patriots, and Seahawks. The Rams started the season 0-8 last year. There's no guarantee that won't happen again. Camp: Mequon, Wis.

23 — Arizona: The biggest news out of Arizona this summer involved pictures of quarterback Matt Leinart drinking out of a beer bong with a few college co-eds. On the field, Leinart's still splitting snaps with veteran Kurt Warner and there are question marks across the Cardinals defense. Arizona's always a sexy sleeper pick out of the NFC West, but they haven't won a division since they took down the NFC East in 1975. Arizona's got a shot at the playoffs this year, but they're probably on the outside looking in. So pretty much — same old story. Camp: Flagstaff, Ariz.

24 — Chicago: In short, I hate the Chicago quarterback situation, am not crazy about the running backs, don't think any of the receivers are legitimate NFL first or second options, and think the offensive line is simply too young to protect. But other than that, the Bears are just fine. This could be a long year for Chicago fans. Devin Hester may need to do even more than he has the past two seasons. That offense will need all the help it can get. Camp: Bourbonnais, Ill.

25 — Baltimore: Forget their obvious question marks at quarterback. It's the super young, super inexperienced offensive line that scares me most about the Ravens. Long gone are the days of Jonathan Ogden holding the unit together. It's now a mix of journeymen veterans and recent draft picks doing the heavy lifting. The AFC North is a bit of a crapshoot this season and I'm loving what I've heard about coach John Harbaugh. Baltimore could very well be the sleeper pick to steal the division crown. I just wouldn't count on it. They're simply too young. Camp: Westminster, Md.

26 — Oakland: Al Davis was quite generous this offseason. Just ask Javon Walker, Gibril Wilson, DeAngelo Hall, Tommy Kelly, Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden — all beneficiaries of Mr. Davis's desperate commitment to excellence. Who can argue with the money he shelled out? The Raiders are a nauseating 19-61 over the past five seasons and haven't sniffed the playoffs in years. I'm actually pretty excited about the Jamarcus Russell-Darren McFadden combo out of the backfield. The SEC meets the Black Hole. Hopefully, with it, come a few wins along the way. Camp: Napa Valley, Calif.

27 — New York Jets: The Jets opened up their wallets this offseason, adding several big-money free agents across the board. The offensive line — New York's Achilles' heel last season — now features four former first-round picks and is one of the highest-paid units in the league. But questions still linger around the quarterback position. Pennington or Clemens? Ugh. The Jets have already gone public saying they have absolutely no interest in Brett Favre. Umm ... why not? Camp: Hempstead, N.Y.

28 — San Francisco: Everybody's sexy pick of the '07 offseason fell flat on its face. No one's hyping up the young 49ers this summer. But maybe they should be. Mike Martz brings another new offense for Alex Smith, Isaac Bruce serves as a reliable veteran target, and '07 rookies Joe Staley and Patrick Willis were among the league's best first-year players. With a healthy offensive line, perhaps Frank Gore returns to his '06 form. This is the make-or-break year for Smith, though. Is he a David Carr/Tim Couch No. 1 overall pick? A guy who just never put it together? Or is he a late bloomer, like Eli Manning in New York? Camp: Santa Clara, Calif.

29 — Detroit: In every season since Matt Millen took over the Lions in 2001, Detroit has finished under .500, missed the playoffs, and ended the year in either last or second-to-last place in the NFC North. Last season, Detroit's defense gave up more yards and points per game than any team in the entire league, while the squad's quarterback, Jon Kitna, was sacked more than any other signal caller in the league. So, to say the expectations are low in the Motor City for the Lions this year is a bit of an understatement. In truth, Detroit brings in an entirely new offensive gameplan under Jim Colleto, three new starting defensive backs and a new backfield star in rookie Kevin Smith. The postseason isn't likely, but an improvement from last year's dismal November and December output certainly is. Camp: Allen Park, Mich.

30 — Miami: The Dolphins aren't doing anything this year, but they won't go 1-15 either. Miami will be a fun team to watch, both young and hard-working, under the watchful eye of first year coach Tony Sparano. Though it's tough to see Jason Taylor leave, he and Bill Parcells were never going to work and the trade to Washington netted a few solid future draft picks. One intriguing player to watch? Our old friend Ricky Williams. What's he have left? And is he going to make it through the year? Camp: Davie, Fla.

31 — Kansas City: Despite rave reviews for a strong draft, the Chiefs are still 1-2 years away from even thinking about the playoffs. Sorry, K.C. fans, but after tip-toeing around it for years, the franchise is finally in full blown rebuilding mode and there's officially no turning back. The Chiefs are just too young to be competitive in the AFC. If it's wins you want to see, you might want to check back in around 2010. Camp: River Falls, Wis.

32 — Atlanta: The Falcons feature a first-year quarterback, a first-year coach and a first-year general manager. In other words, there's always next year, folks. In truth, the Falcons feature a few nice young pieces, but they are simply too young and too inexperienced to win more than 5-6 games this season. But hey, at least UGA looks good this year. Knowshon for Heisman! Camp: Flowery Branch, Ga

Jason Snelling vs. Thomas Brown

The only way I see us keeping both is if we convert Snelling to FB. Here are five things to watch as first-year coach Mike Smith spends the next six weeks preparing to open the season on Sept. 7 against Detroit at the Georgia Dome:

1. Departed Pro Bowler DeAngelo Hall might not be the only cornerback to be replaced.

Smith said both cornerback spots are up for grabs, meaning second-year cornerback Chris Houston need not rest on a decent rookie season. Brent Grimes, Von Hutchins, Houston, David Irons and rookies Chevis Jackson and Wilrey Fontenot will battle at both spots.

"That position is one where there is going to be an opportunity for a number of guys to win that starting job," Smith.

2. Even if veteran wide receiver Joe Horn reports, will he be able to earn a job? Roddy White and Laurent Robinson have the top two spots and rookie Harry Douglas and vet Michael Jenkins seemingly will be competing for the third and fourth spots. The No. 5 wideout has to be a special teams ace to get on the field. Adam Jennings, Brian Finneran and Eric Weems could be better suited for such a role than the 36-year-old Horn, who still hopes to be a rotational player.

3. The left side of the offensive line — the quarterback's blind side — could be comprised of rookie tackle Sam Baker and second-year guard Justin Blalock. They will have to grow up quick. Defensive end John Abraham got the go-ahead in offseason workouts to give Baker the business to help him improve. Abe certainly will dial it up now that everyone's in pads, and Baker could end up better for it.

4. Five-time Pro Bowler Keith Brooking moves back to his natural spot of weakside linebacker — the outside linebacker opposite the tight end — after three seasons of playing in the middle. Brooking can still run and now that he's playing in space, he could provide more of an impact.

5. The Falcons hope it won't be the case, but there is a chance they could be returning a lot of kickoffs this season. Running backs Jerious Norwood and Thomas Brown, as well as wideouts Jennings and Douglas will compete for the return job, which could be as crucial a position as any.

Smith said performances in exhibition games and scrimmages will determine the winner.

Do you guys realize we have a preseason game in 17 days?

Football is almost here people. Atleast it will be something different.

It should be interesting to see how much time each QB gets. I expect Redman to play the 1st quarter. Ryan will probably get the most time and Joey the least. Should also be interesting to see what DJ brings to the table.

Will the Rookies be playing spot duty due to lack of knowledge of the plays or will they just "throw them in the fire" ?

We're about to witness some inspired QB play

I am looking forward to seeing this heated battle at the QB position. In reality, there are several spots up for grabs. QB is going to be the most exciting position battle though. Coach Smith says he's gonna put everyone in uncomfortable situations against opponents first-teamers this preseason. As long as he's true to his word, the players are going to get to show us what they're made of. We keep hearing that DJ and Joey are battling for third string and that it's between Redman and Ryan for first and second...BS!!! Everyone is going for the #1 spot. I do believe Ryan is no less than #2 by virtue of his salary if nothing else. I can't wait to see how everyone's unique talents and character manifest themselves on the gridiron. I asked the dude today while I was paying for my stuff : "Well, how do you think the Falcons will do this year", the reply I got was : "Bad, he said they would be lucky to win 4 games", then he said : "They will probably go 1-15". I then commented by saying : "Either way it's gonna be interesting", and he said : "No it's not, it's not gonna be interesting at all", then he said : "He's trying to get rid of his season tickets now".

My first thought was to say some things that would have probably resulted in my having the police called on me, but I just gritted my teeth and proceeded to pay for my stuff and leave the store.

This really ticked me off, the main reason was this guy had a big neon Falcon in his store for the last 15 years or so and had always been talking Falcons football, and now all the sudden he want's to say things to down the Falcons. What a JERK!!!! I can tell ya this much, I will not be going back to that store, ever again. He's the kinda fans the FALCONS don't need in my opinion : "Fair Weather Falcons Fan".

I have pulled for the Falcons during the dark times, and the good times, and for somebody like that just to give up because they don't believe there is potential with this new "TEAM" in my opinion was never really a Fan at all! What ticked me off the most was he also said : "This season will be worst than last season".

Sorry to bore you with this message, but I kinda needed to vent a little steam after that conversation....... Who knows how many they will win, I'm sure there are a lot on here who would probably agree with what he said, NOT ME! We will see about mid-season how good the Falcons TEAM is. Either way I will still be here pulling for them to win!

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why this Preseason is So Important

Why this preseason is important

By Steve Wyche | Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 02:35 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A lot more importance will be placed on preseason games - not necessarily the final scores - for the Falcons than in recent memory. An abundance of inexperienced players are going to have the opportunity to be starters or in rotations and the coaching staff wants to see what players can deal with the pressure.

To test players, Smith said a lot of rookies and upstarts will be put in situations against opponents’ first and second units. Atlanta’s quarterbacks, in particular, will ideally be put in some uncomfortable situations, head coach Mike Smith said.

That way, the staff will be able to determine how certain players work their way through adversity - if they do. Rookie Matt Ryan is really going to be challenged by coaches in the preseason, since he has been tabbed “the franchise quarterback.” If he’s up to the task, he could very well be the Day One starter.

The preseason won’t be just about the players’ ability to deal with pressure.

This is a new coaching staff and a lot of the coaches haven’t worked together before. So the coaches have to learn how some of their colleagues respond to pressure situations or how they handle themselves in red-zone, time-sensitive situations and the like.

“There is going to be a sense of urgency for the coaching staff as well,” Smith said. “How are we going to handle the two-minute situations and sudden changes? We have to see how all those things are going to occur. It’s going to be a good learning experience not just for the players, but the staff.”

Smith is going to let offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey call the plays and defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder set the defense. As for VanGorder, the preseason will carry even more importance since this is his time as an NFL defensive coordinator.

In addition, it’s the first time the league is allowing a sideline coach (VanGorder) to communicate with a defensive player (most likely LB Keith Brooking) via headset. Although subtle, that is something coaches and players must become familiar with before the regular season starts against Detroit Sept. 7 at the Georgia Dome.

Smith said it’s his duty to manage the game, not make the calls, which can distract a coach (remember last season when play-calling Bobby Petrino was late throwing a challenge flag because he got caught up with managing the situation and choosing his plays?).

(Join Falcons beat writer Steve Wyche for a live two-hour blog as the team prepares to open its 2008 training camp. He was a low draft pick that has not shown a thing in the NFL. We have our starting QB for the future in Ryan, we have a decent back up in Redman and we have a 3rd stringer that has NFL experience in Harrington. If I was going to try to develop a QB to become a more solid #2, I think Harrington is much smarter than Shockley. Then have another Rookie on the practice squad. Plus having Shockley on the roster just brings out the racist people. You don't think the team officials don't look at this board? We have people who want Shockley to have a shot at the starting QB position and Ryan hasn't even played a down. Almost every Rookie QB Struggles at first.

Do you think the Falcons want certain fans booing Ryan with the hope that it might cause the team to try Shockley when Ryan struggles at first? Heck no. They had issues last year with some players wanting Leftwich to return as the starter after he looked worse than Harrington. We don't need any distractions and Shockley could very well turn into one.

Then the most important reason Shockley will not be in Atlanta is when Vick was the QB the offense was set up for a mobile QB and Shockley cold allow them to keep the same play book if he ever developed. With the other QB's on the team now being more pocket passers the play book would have to change for him to be the QB. The team is learning a new playbook for Redman and Ryan. Do you think they need to make the young team learn an even bigger play book to keep a player who has never played a down in the NFL. It would be stupid. Shockley will be a camp arm and the team might give him a little playing time in preseason to give him a chance to get picked up by another team. With all the QB's learning a new offense I doubt he will even get the Preseason playing time because the QB's that are going to be on the team will need it. Because Harrington will look better in camp than Shockley, because he will not be pressured, Harrington is a good QB until he gets pressured. He looked great in training camp last year. Plus in a power running game play action is important, Shockley has to roll out a lot and that does not fair well for play action.

Shockley was an above average College QB and nothing more, Tom Brady's come around here and there, but I didn't see any flashes of greatness when Shockley was going against 3rd stringers in Pre Season. Shaub looked great remember he led all QB's in preseason his first year and he is even struggling as he learns to be the starter. Keeping Shockley would be about as smart as sifting for gold in bath water.

:D

We should do it!(Norwood)

Reggie Bush is used in the slot. He is good for slants, 10 yard passes, and trick plays. Some games he got more yards in the passing than rushing. Why cant Norwood be used the same way? We have Turner to be down to down grind it out back. This will give us much more dynamic offense, and it is generally low risk as for as interceptions go because Norwood would be covered by linebackers if exploited.

Let's Talk a Little X's and O's. Year after year our seasons have gone up in flames because some other "key starter" goes down with a season ending injury or one that takes him our for several weeks. Naturally, I'm just as interested as the next guy is as to who the starters will be. However, when TC starts, I'll be interested to check out the talent we have two and three men deep at different positions. That will be the key to consistency. Injuries happen...they just do. Other teams seem to keep grinding it out when their stars have injuries, while it has ended our season several years in a row. One or two guys do not make a TEAM. Let's hope TD gets it right. I'm confident that he's taking the necessary steps so far.

brooking said he believes they will win a lot of games.

we all want to add gravy jackson, or someone to play the nose for us but we are two deep everywhere else.

QB-1)redman, 2)ryan, 3)[someone after final cuts]

RB-1)turner, 2)norwood, 3)brown(KR)

FB-1)mughelli, 2)snelling

WR-1)white, 2)horn, 3)robinson, 4)jenkins, 5)douglas(PR) deepest position offensivly.

TE-1)hartsock, 2)milner, 3)[zinger, listori, or someone after final cuts]

OL-1)baker, 2)blaylock, 3)mcclure, 4)forney, 5)clabo, 6)weiner, 7)stepanovich, 8)dahl, 9)[foster, ojinakka, or someone after final cuts]

DE-1)abraham, 2)anderson, 3)bierman, 4)evans, 5)[davis or fraser]

DT-1)babinaux, 2)(F/A or cuts), 3)moorehead, 4)stanley

LB-1)boley, 2)taylor, 3)brooking, 4)nicholas, 5)lofton, 6)james deepest position on D.

SS-1)milloy 2)[stone, harris, or cuts]

FS-1)coleman, 2)decoud, 3)cooper

CB-1)grimes, 2)houston, 3)hutchins, 4)jackson, 5)irons

The Most Indispensable Players In The NFL

The Most Indispensable Players In The NFL (according to Jeffri Chadiha)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

1. That is, all an NFL team needs to do to produce a champion is to grab hold of one or two superstars and the composition of the rest of the team doesn't much matter.

A lot of people seem to believe this - including the executives in many NFL team headquarters. It's not hard to see why this thought is pervasive. After all, if a team is successful, what is a sports writer to do? Constantly interview all 90+ players, coaches, trainers, and who knows else associated with the team? Much simpler for everyone, including the team's PR flacks, to latch onto one or two visible players - inevitably on the "O" side of the ball.

Here's a question: if Tom Brady (#1 on Chadiha's indispensable list) was last season's Falcons QB; behind last season's Falcons O-line; throwing to last season's receivers; handing off to last season's running backs; depending on last season's defensive unit to keep the other team off the board; having to deal with last season's head coach, would Brady have lead the Falcons to the playoffs in 2007?

I believe almost everyone would answer "Probably Not". But the "Great Man" theory would hold that Miracle Man Brady, with his superb skills, should have been able to carry the team to greatness. The truth is, however, that if Brady was playing for last season's Falcons team no one would be wondering why he was a sixth-round pick.

The same is true for every other player listed in Chadiha's article. These players happen to be fortunate enough to be playing for a team that - through either design or chance - happen to have other players (and coaches) in key positions good enough to complement the Superstar's talents. It is much more common to see a player with great natural ability reconciled to relative obscurity because his team didn't have the proper "supporting cast".

As an aside and an illustration, I would dearly love to see Brett Favre become the QB for the Bucs - because I don't like the Bucs and I'm not all that enamored with Brett. Favre would find himself, at short notice, in an unfamiliar environment, and the results would very probably be an embarrassment to all concerned.<SPAN style="COLOR: black; I feel as though I have not been as committed to my Falcon as I have been in the previous years. But I have made it back before the season started. And have to say I am very ready to kick butt (or lack there of) but have much optimism for my team this year. I have to say I will miss Alge and Hall very much. But I know the season must go on and the start of the new must go on.

However, I feel I have made up for it. This year I was finally able to get season tickets. The first in my family of Falcons. Eventhough my own boyfriend didn't think it was a good idea. He said I was wasting money. I don't care, I feel like it's money well invested. He want be saying that when we make the playoffs this year (or 2 years down the road).

This is to a great season!!! Orlando Ledbetter
For Sporting News

Site: Atlanta Falcons Training Facility, Flowery Branch, Ga.
Reporting date: July 25.

THREE PRIORITIES

1. Plot a quarterback strategy.

The question is simple: How fast can the Falcons get Matt Ryan on the field without ruining his career? Putting too much pressure on Ryan too soon could do irreparable harm. The answer is to give the reins to Chris Redman and let Ryan adapt slowly behind the team's porous line.

2. Find some holes.

The Falcons spent big money on RB Michael Turner but don't have anyone blocking for him. Line coach Paul Boudreau must figure out a way to open holes, which means rookie T Sam Baker probably will play right away.

3. Get some middle relief.

Can rookie LB Curtis Lofton man the middle, which would allow Keith Brooking to move back outside? Lofton could provide welcome toughness with his full-speed-ahead tenacity. Brooking tends to run around blocks rather than through them.

PURE CAMP
with WR Roddy White

Strangest thing a player has brought to camp: My rookie year, Jerome Pathon brought some Heinekens. I said, "Nobody is drinking those."

Best prank: Probably when they taped up the defensive back and threw him in the pond. I can't remember his name, but I know it was a rookie.

Hardest worker: Adam Jennings can just go all day. He doesn't ever seem to get tired. Michael Jenkins is just consistent. Most of the time he takes all of the reps.

Best way to cope with boredom: Your iPod is very important. And we'll have a pingpong tournament -- Fin (Brian Finneran) and Joey Harrington are the pingpong champs.

Most notorious suck-up: Jennings. He's always around the coaches. Laurent Robinson is a suck-up, too.

Most disgusting thing I've seen: Oh my God, the most disgusting thing in camp is the locker room. It's just too many people. There are not enough shower heads in there.

Matt ryan on the rise

http://sports.yahoo.com/fantasy/nfl/news;_ylt=AoeTbrN.pSXy5_iGSfi7rCNDubYF?slug=be-posprimer08-qb

Matt Ryan -- 201.8 16.8
'07 Stats (Boston College): 59.3 CMP%, 321.9 PYPG, 31:19 TD:INT, 2 RSHYDs, 2 RSHTDs
Lowdown: Yes, Ryan's ridiculous salary is disgusting, but one day he'll be worth every penny. The first quarterback selected in April's draft, Ryan is a strapping youngster (6-foot-5, 218-pounds) known for his toughness, leadership skills and intelligence. Rarely are rookie quarterbacks noteworthy in their inaugural seasons, but Ryan's natural gifts and weapons in Roddy White and Laurent Robinson are major pluses. Its apparent Chris Redman is merely a placeholder until Ryan's ready, but don't expect the youngster behind center until very late in the season. Until then, he only warrants a draft pick in dynasty leagues. Interceptions were a bugaboo for Ryan at Boston College but he unquestionably has the talent to one day develop into a frontline fantasy starter.
Fearless Forecast (2 games): 229.5 PYPG, 2:5 TD:INT, 17 RSHYDs, 0 RSHTDs

This may Help the Sam Baker contract situation
Bears agreed to terms with rookie LT Chris Williams, the No. 14 overall pick, on a five-year, $13 million contract. $9-10 million is guaranteed.
Sam Baker contract should look something like this..... 5 year, $10 million contract, 8.4 million in guaranteed

I'm Outta Here!

At some obscene hour tomorrow AM (4 to be precise), I shall be patiently (!) waiting in line for the purpose of having TSA paw through my carry on bag.
